If you’re already confident in SEO fundamentals and looking to take your fashion brand’s organic traffic to the next level, this guide is for you.
I’m Tyler Nalbach, founder of SEO Align. I’ve helped several multi-million-dollar fashion brands grow their organic revenue by over $50,000 per month. These eight advanced strategies are broken into three categories: relevance, authority, and user experience.
Relevance
1. On-Page Optimization
After selecting the right keyword, placement matters. I recommend the free Detailed Chrome extension for quick audits. Once your keyword is selected, make sure it’s included in:
- The title tag
- The meta description
- The H1
- The opening text of the page
Take Brahmin’s handbags collection page as an example. Their title tag is “Stylish Leather Handbags and Purses.” While it sounds good, they’re targeting two competitive keywords, “handbags” and “purses” on one page. A better move would be to create two separate pages, each focused on one keyword.
Their H1 just says “Handbags.” That’s too vague if the target is “Leather Handbags.” Updating the H1 to match the intended keyword can have a big impact.
As for the body content, they mention “leather” but not “leather handbags” in the opening. That keyword should be in the very first sentence below the fold.
All of this can be updated in 15 minutes, but only if you know exactly which keyword you’re targeting. In fashion, where competition is fierce, precision matters.
2. Sub-Collection Pages
Many brands create a single collection page and stop there. But that limits your ability to rank for more specific, high-converting keywords.
Brahmin does have sub-categories like:
- Crossbody
- Satchels
- Shoulder bags
But you can go deeper. For example, you could create pages for:
- Leather Satchels
- Brown Leather Satchels
The more specific the keyword, the lower the competition and the higher the conversion rate. A search for “brown leather satchel” comes from someone ready to buy. Google will favor your page if it’s hyper-specific to that keyword.
Drill deep. Look at all the ways to categorize your products and make pages that match those variations. Every layer you add opens more doors to rank and convert.
Authority
3. Build Linkable Assets
Backlinks still matter, but outreach is harder than ever. The better play is to create content that attracts backlinks without begging for them.
Start by analyzing competitors. Use tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush to identify which of their pages have the most referring domains. For example, Brahmin has a post titled “Four Steps to Ultimate Casual Chic Style” that has 11 backlinks. That’s not something you’d expect to go viral, but it’s working.
Add it to a list of proven link-worthy topics, then build your own unique version.
Even mission-based pages can attract links. Brahmin’s giving page has 12 referring domains. If you’re doing anything charitable, build a page around it and promote it. It could quietly earn backlinks for years.
4. Earn Media Mentions
Platforms like Qwoted, Connectively, and Featured let journalists request expert quotes. Many write about fashion and want insights from founders and marketers.
If your pitch is accepted, they’ll usually include a backlink to your site. Aim to pitch 10 times per month. You don’t need to write essays, just a few clear sentences can land you placements in top-tier publications.
These earned links send strong authority signals to Google and often come from websites you could never land through cold outreach.
5. Write High-Quality Guest Posts
Guest posting still works, but only if you’re selective.
Look for sites that:
- Have real, sustained organic traffic
- Rank for fashion-related keywords
- Only accept high-quality and relevant posts
Avoid spammy blogs with inflated traffic numbers. Instead, focus on building links to your internal pages (like your handbags collection). Boosting page-level authority can drastically improve rankings for competitive keywords.
Make sure the site is clean, trusted, and relevant. Don’t rely on metrics alone. Visit the site and vet it yourself.
User Experience
6. Improve Website Speed
Slow sites kill conversions and rankings. Google notices when someone clicks your site and quickly leaves because it didn’t load fast enough.
Use Google’s PageSpeed Insights or Core Web Vitals tools. They’ll show you where to improve.
If you’re on Shopify, be careful not to overload your store with apps and scripts. Use tools and themes that prioritize speed. If your pages don’t load quickly, no amount of keyword optimization will save you.
7. Remove Aggressive Popups
Don’t greet users with a full-screen popup the second they land. It annoys visitors and hurts your metrics.
If you want to offer a discount or collect emails, wait until the user scrolls, lingers, or engages with your site. The timing matters. A well-placed popup can help, but an aggressive one hurts.
Google also picks up on user signals. If people bounce quickly after a popup, it sends the wrong message.
8. Menu Navigation and Text Placement
Your site’s navigation should be intuitive. Avoid vague categories like “Accessories” unless you clarify what’s inside. For example, “Wallets and Accessories” might be too broad. Spell out what the visitor can expect to see.
Also, be smart about where you place your text content. Keep your product grid at the top of collection pages with just 1–2 lines of intro text above. If you have longer descriptions, place them below the product listings.
Users want to see products first. If they have to scroll through a wall of text, they may never reach the items they came for.
